The Chapter on Wilderness Dwellers

AN 5.181 Wilderness Dwellers Āraññikasutta

"Mendicants, there are these five kinds of wilderness dwellers. What five? A person may be wilderness dweller because of stupidity and folly. Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament. Or because of madness and mental disorder. Or because it is praised by the Buddhas and their disciples. Or for the sake of having few wishes, for the sake of contentment, self-effacement, seclusion, and simplicity. These are the five kinds of wilderness dwellers. But the person who dwells in the wilderness for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.

From a cow comes milk, from milk comes curds, from curds come butter, from butter comes ghee, and from ghee comes cream of ghee. And the cream of ghee is said to be the best of these. In the same way, the person who dwells in the wilderness for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five."

XIX. Phẩm Rừng

(I) (181) Rừng

1. - Có năm hạng người này sống ở rừng. Thế nào là năm?

2. Hạng đần độn ngu si sống ở rừng; hạng ác dục, ác tánh sống ở rừng; hạng kiêu mạn loạn tâm sống ở rừng; hạng ở rừng vì được nghe Thế Tôn và các đệ tử Phật tán thán; hạng vì ít dục, vì biết đủ, vì đoạn giảm, vì viễn ly, vì cầu thiện hành này sống ở rừng;

Này các Tỷ-kheo, có năm hạng người này sống ở rừng.

3. Trong năm hạng người này sống ở rừng, này các Tỷ-kheo, hạng sống ở rừng vì ít dục, vì biết đủ, vì đoạn giảm, vì viễn ly, vì cầu thiện hành này sống ở rừng. Hạng người này trong năm hạng người ấy là đệ nhất, là tối thắng, là thượng thủ, là tối thượng, là tối diệu.

Ví như này các Tỷ-kheo, từ con bò có sữa, từ sữa có lạc, từ lạc có sanh tô, từ sanh tô có thục tô, từ thục tô có đề hồ. Ðây được gọi là đệ nhất. Cũng vậy, này các Tỷ-kheo, trong năm hạng người sống ở rừng, này các Tỷ-kheo, hạng sống ở rừng vì ít dục, vì biết đủ, vì đoạn giảm, vì viễn ly, vì cầu thiện hành này ăn từ bình bát. Hạng người này trong năm hạng người ấy là đệ nhất, là tối thắng, là thượng thủ, là tối thượng, là tối diệu.

AN 5.182 Robes Cīvarasutta

“Mendicants, these five wear rag robes. What five? A person may wear rag robes because of stupidity … corrupt wishes … madness … because it is praised by the Buddhas … or for the sake of having few wishes … These are the five who wear rag robes.”

AN 5.183 Dwelling at the Root of a Tree Rukkhamūlikasutta

“Mendicants, there are these five who dwell at the root of a tree. What five? A person may dwell at the root of a tree because of stupidity … corrupt wishes … madness … because it is praised by the Buddhas … or for the sake of having few wishes … These are the five who dwell at the root of a tree.”

AN 5.184 Charnel Ground Dwellers Sosānikasutta

“Mendicants, these five dwell in a charnel ground. What five? A person may dwell in a charnel ground because of stupidity … corrupt wishes … madness … because it is praised by the Buddhas … or for the sake of having few wishes … These are the five who dwell in a charnel ground.”

4. Này các Tỷ-kheo, năm hạng người sống ở ngoài trời này…

5. Này các Tỷ-kheo, năm hạng người ngồi không chịu nằm này…

6. Này các Tỷ-kheo, năm hạng người nằm bất cứ chỗ nào được mời này…

7. Này các Tỷ-kheo, năm hạng người chỉ ngồi ăn một lần này…

8. Này các Tỷ-kheo, năm hạng người theo hạnh ăn xong, sau không ăn nữa…

"Mendicants, these five eat only from the almsbowl. What five? A person may eat only from the almsbowl because of stupidity and folly. Or because of corrupt wishes, being of wishful temperament. Or because of madness and mental disorder. Or because it is praised by the Buddhas and their disciples. Or for the sake of having few wishes, for the sake of contentment, self-effacement, seclusion, and simplicity. These are the five kinds of people who eat only from the almsbowl. But the person who eats only from the almsbowl for the sake of having few wishes is the foremost, best, chief, highest, and finest of the five.
